Makerspace Sustainability Incubator Funded!

We are excited to announce that our “Makerspace Sustainability Incubator” proposal was successfully funded through the TRU Sustainability Grant Fund! We are incredible excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with the TRU Sustainability Office and everyone else to make this project a success!

The grant aims to turn the Makerspace into a shared resource for sustainability by providing tools, resources, and infrastructure for design, innovation, and making that advances environmental and social sustainability. Ultimately we want to promote a culture of repair and maintenance, decrease duplication of purchases, and enhance equitable access to tools and materials for the campus community.

The grant has 3 main goals:

  1. Establish a Tool Library of basic household, bicycle, and gardening tools: The tool library will foster a culture of repair and maintenance, decrease duplication of purchases, and enhance equitable access to tools for the campus community.
  2. Create a Fiber Bank of donated textiles and other materials for the TRU community to access: The Fiber Bank will provide resources for completing assignments, prototyping designs, and creating/repairing clothing and other items. The Fiber Bank will redirect items that are currently being wasted or under-utilized and encourage re-use and repair of clothing and other textiles.
  3. Turn the Makerspace into a “Sustainability Incubator” that campus groups can use to pursue environmental and social sustainability goals: We will also be hiring two student Makerspace Sustainability Champions who help us build relationships with campus groups and develop additional infrastructure and programming that will make it easier for campus groups to run sustainability programs and initiatives at the Makerspace.

We will be announcing more details in the coming months. Our instagram is always the best place to keep up to date with what is happening in the Makerspace. If you have questions about this grant or our goals, or ideas about how the Makerspace can support sustainability, please reach out to us at makerspace@tru.ca.
