TRU Repair Café free for TRU and Kamloops community members
Do you have small household items or clothing/textiles that need to be repaired or altered? Don’t throw them away; bring them to the TRU Repair Café March 5 at TRU.
The Repair Café is a free event organized by the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Sustainability Office in partnership with Repair Café Kamloops and TRU Library Makerspace. It will take place March 5, 2024, from 10 am to 3 pm at the TRU Library Makerspace on TRU’s campus, which is located on the first floor in the Brown Family House of Learning (behind Tim Hortons). The event is open to all TRU and Kamloops community members, no registration is needed, and there will be free snacks. A list of accepted items is shown below.
Repair Cafés are part of a growing international grassroots movement that aim to reduce waste, overconsumption, and planned obsolescence. They can re-ignite the do-it-together and “do it yourself” spirit and strengthen social cohesion. Repair Cafés are typically run by a team of volunteers and are free for those participating.
Repair Café volunteers will assess whether your item is reparable or whether it should be sustainably recycled or disposed of. If there’s hope to mend your item, Repair Café “fixers” will diagnose what’s ailing it and teach you how to carry out the repair.
Repair Café Kamloops is an initiative of Transition Kamloops, a local not-for-profit dedicated to building a more resilient community. Repair Café volunteers gratefully acknowledge funding from the City of Kamloops’ Climate Action Grant. The group is working to help Kamloops achieve its goals in the Community Climate Action Plan. Items that will be accepted at the TRU event include:
- Clothing and textiles that need typical repairs. If a new zipper is needed, every attempt will be made to facilitate this, but there are no guarantees
- Small household electronic appliances and electrical items (lamps, kitchen appliances, vacuums, etc.)
- Wood furniture that needs simple repairs (loose parts, missing screws, etc.)
- Bicycles
Items that will not be accepted include:
- Gas or other fuel powered devices
- Computers or cell phones
- Anything that needs two or more people to carry
The TRU Repair Café is part of SDG Week Canada (March 4-8, 2024), a week-long celebration promoting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. The SDGs are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity.
